30/11/2003 8th place at Convention 2003
SCS came 8th out of 28 choruses in the national competition at Harrogate, November 2003.
Every Convention has its “firsts”, the most obvious one this year being our allocated time for stage performance- 5:00p.m.Recent years have seen us at rehearsal at 9:00a.m. and on stage at 11:00a.m.It was very nice to be able to have breakfast on the Saturday morning at a civilised time rather than at what seemed the middle of Friday night! A rehearsal at 10:00a.m. and another at 2:00p.m. did mean that we were unable to get a look at the competition. That did have its pros and cons. It was possible to prepare and give some quiet thought to 5:00p.m. but on the other hand it was difficult to keep the adrenalin under control until just the right moment!

Unfortunately, for various reasons, Sandy, Hilda, Jean Hallam and Sharon were unable to be with us. We did miss them but took their good wishes with us. This gap between rehearsals did give us the chance to go into the Convention Centre and have a look at all the presentations on offer in the Reception area. Thanks to Gladys, our archivist, who produced a superb book in spite of her personal health difficulties.

The witching hour arrived and there we were, actually on the stage with the curtains opening. As usual our performance seemed to be over before we had drawn breath. As we were the last but one chorus to perform another “first” followed. Following the photo call we went into the auditorium in our stage dresses, something that professional artistes never do! However, we needed to be there for the results. Other competing choruses made many positive, complimentary comments to us as we walked to our seats and we felt quite confident. However, it was not to be and although we were 5th in the Singing category we did not make sufficient impact on the judges and we came 8th overall.

After all the analyses and heart searching the fact remains that Convention is a highlight in the year. However you can’t keep a Barbershopper down for long and following our disappointment I heard several of the girls discussing Convention 2004. It would be almost impossible to thank by name all those who contributed to this highly organised event. It was a real team effort and we should be mindful of the extremely hard work put in by the Convention team, not forgetting the chorus as a whole. The work continued after our return with Diane chasing information from the judges, which we hope, will be of value in the future.

10/03/2003 5th place in the European competition in Holland!
Second City Sound came 5th in the European Competition held in Holland on March 8th 2003
Yes, it really has come and gone. All the months of planning, fundraising and rehearsing all squeezed into 10 minutes on 8th March in Eindhoven.

First of all some statistics. From Birmingham airport to the Holiday Inn in Eindhoven and back was 792 miles. Second City Sound diversified in a big way with some travelling to and from other airports, on different days, at different times, by land and sea. Indeed, some took advantage of the opportunity and made a real holiday of it - and why not? 22 quartets competed. 21 choruses, numbering 471 singers, raised the rafters at the Koningshof.

Questions;

Who managed to get a seat on the Friday evening flight next to a dishy young man?
Who was given the wrong key to the wrong room at the hotel at 11.00pm on Friday night and got poor Eileen out of bed in her vain attempt to gain access to the room?
Who moved all the cushions in the reception area at the Conference Centre in an attempt to find coins lost down the side of the settees? Times is 'ard and we're not proud.
Who, on the return flight, immediately got the rather suave, distinguished man on her right to help her with her seat belt?

The Friday night out and Sunday night return flights were both an hour late but it was good to do a bit of singing at Amsterdam airport to while away the 4 hours we sat and kicked our heels.

We were very glad to have the support of Sid and our other "groupies" - Ken, John and John. We had a very nice room allocated for our use at the Koningshof and although we arrived hours in advance of our performance, the time seemed to go by quite quickly as we breathed, sung, exercised and generally wound ourselves up to performance standard.

Along with the reading of cards of good wishes before we went on stage, we spared a moment to think of our 3 absent ladies, Jean, Mary and Hilda. We performed with gusto, enthusiasm, determination and confidence but I think we all knew who was going to get the gold! However, our 6th place was very creditable and we will be able to learn much from them. The shows were really good with guest performers coming from the USA (and of course UK!!!) Afterglow was just that, with lots of meeting, singing and mingling by and with various choruses.

I heard many comments at the shocking number of smokers and it was disconcerting to see quite a haze when looking down the long corridors in the building. I certainly had a very troublesome throat the following week. Kaleidoscope gave me a private performance of their new number - it has potential and I hope they don't discard it. Perhaps I liked it because it is a golden oldie.

As usual, these weekends away gave an opportunity to get to know the "other side" of many members of the chorus and I found it very interesting to hear about the other "hats" that people wear.

Special mention must be made of Dorothy who showed devotion above and beyond the call of duty. While sitting on the coach on the Sunday morning, waiting for it to take us to the conference centre, the Deputy Lady Mayoress complained that the open door was creating a draught across her legs and feet. Dorothy immediately leapt up and laid down across the door. Although this act of heroism does not permit Dorothy to sit in the House of Lords, she does now carry the Civic Warrant as Official Draught Excluder.

John Hyde celebrated his you-know-what birthday and now has his bus pass - welcome to the world of the twerleys, John.

Gladys and John celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary actually on the 8th March and, having shed a tear as we sang to them, many of us cried again when Matrix sang to them on the Sunday morning following the show.

You can see photos of our trip.
